This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Learn more The incumbent practices as a registered nurse in the Medicine Unit, Nursing Section of the Patient Care Service within the Detroit VAMC. The medical inpatient unit specializes in treating adults and geriatric veterans with acute conditions. Common patient medical conditions include endocrine, hematology/oncology, cardiology, respiratory renal, and infectious diseases. Patients frequently experience transitory mental status changes or have a secondary psychiatric diagnosis. Demonstrates technical and operational knowledge and is able to apply these skills in the clinical setting. Operates specialized therapeutic and life support equipment. The RN is accountable as a primary nurse for a defined group of patients and assumes rotating charge nurse responsibilities. Monitors activities occurring within the unit when acting in the charge nurse capacity. The nurse collaborates with physicians and ancillary services in planning and implementing the patient's plan of care. provides patient teaching as appropriate. Analyzes and upgrades patient care through quality improvement activities. Strives to maintain clinical competencies through continuous study, in services and participation in obtaining continuing education units. Demonstrates knowledge and/or required safety skills in area of assignment, and when appropriate, in the following emergency preparedness, hazardous materials, fire plan, equipment failure, emergency plan and utility outage response procedures for their area. Develops realistic and measurable outcomes for identified patient needs and evaluates patient's progress toward outcomes. Revises the plan of care when appropriate. Effectively directs the flow of patient care. Consistently models professional conduct in routine and stressful situations. Demonstrates leadership with compliance with infection control practices, such as hand washing and wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment. Demonstrates clinical competence in performing core and practice-specific procedures/competencies according to the Competency Checklist for the Medical Unit, including but not limited to blood administration, barcode administration of medications including controlled substances, pain management, PCA and IV infusion pumps, IV/ PICC/Central, Line /lnfusaport management, PEGs and suprapubic tubes, Foley catheters, tube feedings and tracheotomy care and suctioning.
