The Health Tech in Specialty Clinic is a multi-skilled position established to provide direct patient care and provider support in the Specialty Clinics. They include: podiatry, dermatology, orthopedics, general surgery, pain clinic, spine clinic, ENT clinic, urology, cardiology, rheumatology, infectious disease, pulmonology, neurology, oncology and pacemaker. Assist and prepare patients for Urology, Minor Surgery/Dermatology, ENT, Cardiology / Pulmonary / Rheumatology / Neurology, Oncology and Orthopedics. Assist patients into designated procedure areas. Assist patients in positioning for procedures using any lifts, turns and devices that may be applicable for the patient. Prepare and transport patients as needed for tests or discharge.Minor Surgery/Dermatology/Podiatry- Perform a range of diagnostic support duties which include taking vital signs, including pain assessment using a 1-10 scale or a behavioral indicator scale. Ensure station accu-check quality controls are done daily and perform patient accuchecks and correct labeling and handling of specimens for the laboratory and delivery of them in a timely manner. Consistently make accurate gross observations of the patient's condition and reports and documents findings. Verify pre-packing of all sterile items and assure package integrity and sterility of kits, and the expiration date is current. Set up complete sterile field for minor surgery procedures, (e.g., shave, punch, and excision biopsies) along with instruments, surgical site preparation. Handle all specimen collection and pathological labeling of biopsied specimens, and function as primary scrub person on all procedures; as needed, scrub and assist surgeon with sponge, suture cutting, holding of retractors/skin hooks and instrument counts. Apply steri-strips and pressure dressings to surgical sites as needed per surgeon. Must set up hyfrecator 2000 adjusting electro-current for cauterization and have broad knowledge of sutures and supply them to surgeon as needed during procedure. Responsible for the taking of surgical grade pictures of lesion site/location and their documenting and downloading into patient records and anatomical labeling of images for patient records. Responsible for daily maintenance and filling of Liquid Nitrogen gun/canister for patient cryotherapy treatment of SK, and AK skin lesions: including documentation of number and location of lesions for provider. Prepare daily minor surgery schedules for each provider clinic. Perform daily restocking of minor surgical rooms and routine disposal of outdated procedural items; and the printing of patient procedural discharge notes, along with detailed documentation and computer generated surgical procedure Non-OR documents. Obtain nasal/wound cultures for MRSA. Instruct patients and families in proper care of post minor surgical wounds. Assist with application of wound graft: Sterile application of dressings. Assist physician in performing and scheduling of patient f/u for suture removal, surgical staple removal, wound care and/or dressing changes and performance of the same applying sterile and non-sterile dressings, wound irrigation, wound packing, complex dressings and subsequent patient chart note documentation and itemized encounter ICD-9 Code (Billing). Assist with hot and cold packs and 12-lead EKGs for pre-op patients. ENT/DERM- Function as primary scrub person on all procedures: skin grafts, ear reconstruction, bi-lobe rhomboid flaps, and fine needle aspirations. Set up surgical ear vent tube implants plus instruments and assists provider with procedure. Urology-Operate Uroflow and Bladder Volume Index machines, perform urine testing, (dip stick), atraumatic urinary catheterizations and bladder irrigations, and replace urethral catheters under the direction of a physician. Provide invasive routine replacement of and patient education in the use of catheter leg bags, patient straight catheterization, etc. Cardiology/Pulmonology/Rheumatology/Neurology/Oncology-Perform EKGs for all patients, including orthostatic vital signs for patients who have light-headedness and dizziness. Ensure patient has completed PFT prior to visit. Monitor oxygen flow rate. Orthopedic- Work in close cooperation with Orthopedic Doctor and mid level provider ensuring their diagnostic orders for long and short plaster and/or fiberglass casts are placed accurately on all extremities. Apply casts, splints and cast braces, operate the cast saw, cut, trim and remove casts. Fit and apply prefabricated shoulder immobilizers, rib belts, clavicle splints, cervical collars, ankle braces and knee immobilizers. Responsible for sterile setup of all shots and procedural injection sites, needle aspirations of fluid in joints and provides freezing aerosol called Ethyl Chloride mist spray for topical anesthetic skin refrigerant for knee, shoulder, and hip injections for providers use. Responsible for all pharmacy hyalgan injection and synvisc shot pick-up.
