This Registered Nurse position is located in Nursing Service-Operating Room at the West Haven location. This position is a full time at 40 hours per week. Nursing Service is recruiting for a Registered Nursing position in the Operating Room. The incumbent practices as a registered nurses in the Operating Room, Nursing Section of Surgical Service within VA Connecticut Healthcare Systems. The incumbent must demonstrate and maintain competencies required for all process, procedures and equipment used in the Operating Room. The operating rooms specialize in caring for adult and geriatric veterans during the perioperative experience. The operating rooms provide the following services: General surgery, Gyne surgery, ear, nose and throat, ophthalmic, peripheral vascular, thoracic, urologic, plastic, podiatric, endoscopic and laparoscopic, Cardiac Open Heart, Neurosurgery, Ophthamalogy, Major Orthopedic, i.e. Total Joints. The nurse has the technical and operational knowledge and clinical skills to function as a circulating and scrub nurse in all the services. The nurse must demonstrate a variety of specialized diagnostic and treatment procedures. The nurse is accountable for promoting patient safety, continuity/quality of care and general well-being of the patient. Duties include but are not limited to: The perioperative registered nurse is accountable for patient outcomes resulting from the nursing care provided during the perioperative experience. A perioperative registered nurse functioning in the circulating role must plan and direct the nursing care of every patient undergoing surgical and/or other invasive procedures. The operating room nurse must demonstrate expertise, in both the circulating and scrub nurse roles, in a minimum of one surgical specialty and demonstrate minimal competency in all other surgical specialties aforementioned performed. The operating room nurse maintains order and cleanliness in operating room. The operating room nurse must demonstrate competency in pre-op assessment of the surgical patient This includes actively acting as the patients advocate in regard to assessing the patients understanding of the surgical consent and procedure they are about to undergo. Assessing that the patient has followed pre-operative instructions, i.e. NPO status, halting of anti-coagulation medication, etc. The operating room nurse must ensure all instruments; supplies and equipment are present and functional before the surgical procedure. They have to ensure sterility of all the surgical instruments before the surgery. The operating room nurse ensures counting of surgical instruments and specialty equipment occurs prior to and at the end of the procedure to ensure all instruments are accounted for prior to patients leaving the surgical suite. The operating room nurse performs a proper surgical time out prior to incision for all surgical procedures. When pertinent the operating room nurse performs a fire safety time out prior to the start of a procedure. This position is covered by a special rate. Selectee may be required to work at any VA Connecticut Healthcare System campus, as needed. Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50 (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held. This position is in the Excepted Service. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will recommend the grade and salary for new appointments based on the candidate's education and experience. For internal selectees being promoted, the board will determine grade and HR will determine step in accordance with policy.
