JOB SUMMARY:
Provides Diagnostic Ultrasound examinations to patients under the general supervision of the Medical Director of Vascular Services. The Ultrasound Tech typically will provide these types of examinations: Abdominal ultrasounds to evaluate the aorta, renal arteries, SMA arteries, iliac arteries; venous and arterial ultrasounds of the upper and lower extremities, carotid ultrasounds, dialysis graft scans, segmentals, ABIs, and TBIs. The job requires that the Ultrasound Tech exercise mature and independent judgment. Ultrasound Tech may be assigned duties of an instructor in areas of demonstrated expertise. Ultrasound Tech is responsible for applying for and maintaining accreditation for the vascular lab.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
- An Associate of Science (A.S.) degree or completion of a certified training program
EXPERIENCE
- Two years’ full time experience as a paid Ultrasound Tech Ability to competently perform all the examinations listed in the job summary.
PREREQUISITE SKILLS
Technical ability to perform all diagnostic Vascular ultrasound examinations as outlined in the lab protocols in accordance with ICVAL accreditation
Have a fundamental knowledge of the vascular anatomy and vascular disease process.
Ability to make sound clinical judgment.
Ability to interact with the general public, clients, staff and referring physicians with diplomacy, tact, and goodwill.
Ability to participate in department team quality improvement activities.
LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
- American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer certificate (ARDMS)
- Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)

This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL
- Apply for and maintain accreditation for vascular lab.
- Reviews patient medical history and results of previous diagnostic studies. Integrates knowledge of patient history with examination to be performed.
- Competently performs all sonographic examinations as outlined in the department policy and procedure manual. Report studies and enter appropriate charges in a timely manner.
- Selects appropriate equipment to perform exam. Selects appropriate technical factors to optimize image quality. Records images with proper patient identification. Records images on film and other archival media. Annotates images accurately.
- Triage critical findings to MD/PA as appropriate. Send results to Vascular Surgeon for medical interpretation. May discuss findings with physician for optimal interpretation.
- Assists the vascular surgeon with performance of targeted thrombin injections, vein procedures, and drainage of cysts. Performs first aid as necessary.
- Effectively explains exam to patient in order to elicit cooperation and reduce apprehension. Assists patient in positioning for optimal exam results.
- Maintains a clean procedure area. Cleans equipment as needed.
- Provides for the safety, mental and physical comfort of the patient while performing ultrasound examinations.
- May provide instruction to students of Radiological Technology and Ultrasound who are enrolled in an affiliated program
- Serves on committees as assigned. Attends and participates in department meetings. Participate in the assessment, planning, and implementation process of new technology.
- Ability to accurately troubleshoot ultrasound equipment in order to knowledgeably communicate need for repair to service personnel. Reports equipment failure to site supervisor and/or vendor. Keeps orderly equipment repair log books.
- Ability to accurately troubleshoot Medstreaming and other reporting software, communicate reporting issues with vendor/IT/Physicians/staff.
- Uses effective critical thinking skills in order to implement alternative methods when problems arise so that satisfactory solutions are achieved.
- Knowledgeable about equipment down-time procedures for Radiology Information System.
- Effectively manage schedules and prioritizes work assignments for maximum productivity
- Effectively responds to emergency situations. Able to integrate emergency work into regularly scheduled responsibilities.
- Accurately uses Electronic Health System to process patient information.
- Attends continuing education in order to maintain certification, licensure, and accreditation and clinical competencies.
- Constantly promotes a positive and professional image in the hospital.
- Performs special projects and other duties as assigned by supervisor, manager, or medical provider.
